History of Cricket at La Manga

La Manga Club's cricketing history dates back to 1982 when the first cricket pitch, the only one of its kind in Spain, opened. The objective was to bring together enthusiasts of the game, especially European cricket teams for pre-season training. Pat Pocock, the famous England player and Surrey captain, was appointed to run the Cricket Centre.

Many cricket-related events were held here and a number, such as the 'Gaymer's Olde English Cider Celebrity Sixes' in December 1984, were shown on television. Taking part in the event on the cricket stars' team captained by Ian Botham were Derek Pringle, Phil Edmonds, Chris Cowdrey, Eddie Hemmings and Pat Pocock. On the celebrities' team, which was captained by Lenny Bennett, were Patrick Mower, Malcolm MacDonald, Jim Watt and Peter Cook.

During the 1990s, cricket took a back seat at La Manga Club while the management concentrated their investments and efforts on other sports facilities.

In 2003 cricket made a great come back with the construction of two Club Turf cricket pitches and the signing of a partnership agreement with the National Association of Clubs and League Cricket Conferences (NACLCC) from England, with a view to jointly promoting this excellent new facility to cricket clubs.

The inaugural Festival of Cricket was held in November 2003 and attracted famous cricketers including former England star Derek Underwood and current Ladies' captain Clare Connor.

And, now, your team has the opportunity to become part of La Manga Club's cricketing hall of fame!
